Founder’s Day – February 14 Celebrating Hazel Cornell
a Trailblazer in Rail

On February 14, we proudly celebrate Founder’s Day and honor Hazel Cornell, Founder and First National President (1941–1943) of the National Association of Railroad Business Women (NARBW).
What began with Hazel simply recognizing that railroad women deserved the same sense of community, professional support, and opportunity as their male counterparts quickly became a national organization—signed by 12 railway businesswomen and chartered in Minnesota in 1941.
Hazel Cornell was more than a founder; she was a visionary leader who believed in the strength of women supporting women. She created opportunities where few existed, building a professional network that fostered mentorship, leadership development, and lasting friendships. Her commitment laid the groundwork for an organization that would grow, thrive, and continue to make an impact for generations.
More than eight decades later, NARBW continues to support, connect, and empower women across the railroad industry. We are proud to carry forward Hazel Cornell’s vision and leadership, honoring her legacy through service, education, and community.
As we celebrate Founder’s Day, we recognize that the organization we enjoy today exists because of Hazel’s courage, determination, and belief in what women could accomplish together. Her legacy lives on in every member, every chapter, and every connection made through NARBW.

Southern California Chapter
Steps Up for Heart Health
Members of NARBW SoCal walked in memory of their beloved chapter member Ilyssa DeCasperis, marking the first anniversary of her passing due to heart disease. As part of the Metrolink team in the American Heart Association LA Heart Walk, the chapter honored her legacy with action, awareness, and heart.
Leading up to the event, members participated in weekly wellness challenges to boost engagement and fundraising. Each challenge earned entries into prize drawings—one for local members and one for national participants. The chapter raised nearly $700 toward the $8,700 total contributed by Metrolink.
“This journey is more than just steps—it’s a tribute to her memory and a commitment to heart health.”
– Shamonda Jones, Chapter President
